High School Prep
In order to pursue admission into one of the prestigious NYC Specialized High Schools, eighth grade students must take the NYC Specialized High School Admissions Test. The Specialized High Schools are:
- Bronx High School of Science
- Brooklyn Latin School
- Brooklyn Technical High School
- High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College
- High School of American Studies at Lehman College
- Queens High School for the Sciences at York College
- Staten Island Technical High School
- Stuyvesant High School
The NYC Specialized High School Admissions Test consists of two parts -- verbal and mathematics. The IS 143 High School Prep program is specially designed to prepare students for this test.
The English (verbal) component is comprised of three sections:
- Given a scrambled paragraph, students are asked to reorder the paragraph so that it is logical and sequential.
- The logical reasoning section asks students to use their reasoning skills to analyze and answer higher order thinking questions.
- Higher level reading passages are given and students are asked comprehension questions.
The Mathematics component has 50 multiple choice questions that cover the following topics: statistics, probability, elementary geometry, basic algebra and arithmetic.
Being that the NYC Specialized High Schools are extremely competitive, we offer this course to ensure that our students score well on this test and have an equitable chance of being accepted into one of the Specialized High Schools.
