School History
In April 1965 Eleanor Roosevelt Junior High School first opened its doors. Classes and grades were marched from Junior High School 115 on 177th Street to our present location on 182nd Street. Some of the teachers who walked the halls at that time were: Tom Pappas, Frank Pollice, Jackson Bunis, Stefa Scheiner, Helen Margolith, Henrietta Gover, Joe Weinike, Hope Irvine, Mable Lilienstein, Olive Hazel, Joan Cohen, and Mel Weisel. They all gave our school its fine reputation. Eleanor Roosevelt, our school's namesake, was an important First Lady who once visited our school. She fought for the rights of the downtrodden and is noted for her famous quote, "You must do the thing you think you cannot do." This inspiring advice still challenges all of us to this very day; it is what our school strives to teach its students.
